Mindful mornings

mindful morning series

“The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you
Don’t go back to sleep!
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep!
People are going back and forth
across the doorsill where the two worlds touch,
The door is round and open
Don’t go back to sleep!” ~ Rumi

I’m not a morning person and in the past I’ve given myself such a hard time for it.  I envied people that sprung out of bed at the crack of dawn, full of energy.

Being a light sleeper, I often didn’t wake up feeling refreshed.  “Oh shit!” was usually the first thought that came to mind as I opened my eyes in the morning. Rushing around to get out the door and to work. I bet I’m not alone there?!

Over time I’ve learnt to turn my crappy mornings around. Firstly by tackling my sleeping issues.  Accepting that from time to time I will have a poor sleep, don’t we all? And that even feeling tired I can make time to take care of myself to ensure the occasional bad start to the day, doesn’t ruin my day altogether.

When we’re constantly feeling tired, it affects our mood, patience grows thin, small issues turn into mountains to climb, tempers fray and we turn to junk food to boost energy levels and comfort.

I go through phases of having a great morning routine, I love the quiet time in my day before it gets busy and I get to do things for me, the things I love. Other times when life runs away with me and I feel myself getting up later, going to bed later, trying to catch up on my day by working into the night and before I know it my yoga practice is flakey, my meditation routine broken and I feel run down again.

So I’ve decided to run the 5 day mindful morning email series ~ 5 emails over 5 days with daily prompts to creating a morning practice that gets your day off to a great start.

I want you to feel healthier and happier as we move towards the end of 2015, so you can start the new year feeling a sense of connection, feeling lighter and happier because you’ve made time for you, to listen and create the space for you to add more fun, freedom, and possibility into you life.

  1. This sounds really exciting Nicola, I’m going to give it a whirl! I’m not morning person either and I’m a light sleeper too and luckily have made my work fit my sleep needs so most mornings I just wake up when my body is ready. I deff need a bit more of a morning routine though.

  2. I loved this. I’m not a morning person either, and it’s gotten worse now that I work for myself, but I still work 8 to 9 hours, despite how long I sleep in. I think a morning routine is super important. My morning routine involves affirmations and gratitude, and looking over my goals. The newsletter is a great idea to help people, including myself that are not great with mornings. :)

  3. What a lovely post and lovely idea! I AM a morning person, but recently my day-job has created feelings of dread and dragging in the morning. My mornings are usually rushed and I would love to just have like 3 hours before having to head into work (without having to wake up at 4am).
